Bafta 2011 and Colin Firth
Actor Colin Firth will learn tonight whether he has won two consecutive Bafta awards for best actor. Should he win, Firth would be the first actor to score a Bafta ‘double’ since Rod Stieger achieved the feat in 1967 and 1968 for his roles in The Pawnbroker and In the Heat of the Night, respectively.
Firth was honoured with the award last year for his performance in A Single Man whilst this year he stands to win it again for his role in The King’s Speech as King George VI.
The film has already been widely acclaimed and is up for a total of 14 awards, including the categories of best director and best film. Firth has already received awards for The King’s Speech at the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe award ceremonies, as well as at the London Film Critics’ Circle awards on Thursday of last week.
The event, which will take place at the Royal Opera House in London will begin at 2100 GMT on BBC One and will be hosted by Jonathan Ross. Prior to the ceremony, BBC Three will be broadcasting from the red carpet.
Among other films, Black Swan stands to win 12 Bafta awards, whilst Inception has received nine nominations. The Coen brothers’ True Grit and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours each are up for eight awards. Source – Car Rent
